Manchester Chinese Community Exhibition

Exhibition flyer The youth of Manchester Chinese Centre have organised an exhibition at the Manchester Central Library from 4th March to 4th April 2009. Our theme of this exhibition is the Manchester Chinese Community. Chinese word is (Home is Manchester). As the third generation Chinese our home is Manchester and we are part of Manchester Community; fortunately, we have best of both Chinese and British cultures.

The aim of it is to highlight the achievements of Manchester Chinese community in all its walks of life. This exhibition will explore every type of people’s different lives in the Chinese community, including their aims, current issues and their hidden past.

We contacted the Chinese community to gather some very old items from China town as old books and magazine from restaurant cupboard, Golden corn sward which was hanging behind the restaurant bar or kitchen, old moon cake tin, abacus use for restaurant bill calculation….. etc. It has been creating quite emotion feeling and revel their memories. Some of the elderly were in tears when they see our display at the Central Library. Mrs. Chan said: “Chinese people come from long way to hold an exhibition at the Manchester Central Library. I hope all the young generation would cherish it. ”

Today, the third generation of Chinese children achieves high academic grades and leave catering family business to peruse another career in the mainstream social system. The new immigrants from Mainland China are work in universities as tutors and researchers. This is totally different to life in the 50s, where the main employers for the Chinese were laundry shops. The exhibition goes on to describe major influences and changes with the Chinese community throughout the five decades.

Since the 80s Chinese scholars have been contributing vast quantities of scientific, medical, computing, economical, engineering and mathematical research for universities, their efforts have still not yet been properly acknowledged, so it is one of our aims to help credit them for their work here.

It is widely thought that Chinese people are mainly only good at catering this is mainly because as a culture we believe in hiding our achievements for fear of immodesty. However, I feel that we should be proud of how far we have come and celebrate every individual’s success and move with time. We would like to promote the Chinese community’s achievement and to change the definition of stereotype; this is possible with your help.
